Concussion Injury
Los Angeles California Motor Vehicle AccidentÂ
A concussion (con-CUH-shun) is a injury to the tissues of the brain. It can result from a blow to any part of the head, including the face, scalp, or skull. In a motor vehicle accident this can be sever. Some concussions lead to slow bleeding in the head and other problems.
Mild Concussion
Mild concussions are the most common in car accidents and can occur and all types of car accidents. They often go unrecognized because symptoms are so subtle and do not include loss of consciousness. If loss of consciousness does occur during a mild concussion, it is usually not for longer than 30 minutes. Still, mild concussions do cause damage to the brain and therefore should be handled with care. Any person who suffers a mild concussion or any head injury should be monitored closely for at least 24 hours following the injury to make sure symptoms do not worsen.
Post Concussion Syndrome
15 to 30 percent of people who have had a concussion suffer from post concussion syndrome. Around 15 to 30 percent of people who suffer a concussion experience long term effects deemed post-concussion syndrome.
Normal symptoms of concussion usually subside within three months of the injury. Symptoms that persist beyond three months could be consistent with a post concussive syndrome diagnosis. While post concussive syndrome could be related to an acute brain injury, it could also result as a psychological consequence of severe head trauma. Symptoms of concussion frequently last longer in those patients who additionally suffer from anxiety, stress or depression.
